Chapter 2: So Compatible
The car continued smoothly on the road, and the driver in the front didn’t show any reaction to the conversation happening behind, indicating that he had gotten used to it.
Jiang Suizhou acknowledged it, “So, should I take you home?”
If he couldn’t do anything, he should at least take her home, this dog of a man!
Indignant, she kicked his leg, and finding one kick not satisfying, she attempted a second one, only to have him grab her ankle.
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Suizhou asked as he held her ankle.
“Go to your home. I’m in a bad mood and don’t want to go home,” Guan Xi replied irritably.
Bad mood, going to his home, but not going to sleep.
Combining all the cues, Jiang Suizhou asked, “Period?”
Guan Xi wanted to roll her eyes, but thought that this excuse was also plausible. She really didn’t want to go home because she had a feeling that if Jiang Suizhou knew the truth about her identity, he would probably break up with her immediately.
“Yeah.”
“Your period is irregular,” Jiang Suizhou remarked. “Is there something wrong with your body?”
Indeed, he was her loving boyfriend, and while he might forget everything else, he remembered her aunt’s schedule quite clearly.
“I’ve been busy lately,” Guan Xi answered, choosing to go along with this excuse. “Standing all day today made me sore. If I promise to be a bridesmaid again next time, I must be crazy.”
Jiang Suizhou opened his mouth as if wanting to say something, but considering her temper, he decided it wasn’t worth speaking up.
**
Half an hour later, the car went to the house, Jialin Jingyuan.
This property is located in the most prosperous area of the city center, and most of the time, Jiang Suizhou lives alone here. Few outsiders come here, except for Guan Xi. After entering, Guan Xi went to the cloakroom skillfully.
Jiang Suizhou’s cloakroom is very large, neatly arranged with his understated yet valuable clothes. She found a pajama she had placed there and prepared to take a bath and get a good night’s sleep.
In the bathroom, she locked the door and looked at herself in the mirror. Today was indeed busy enough to briefly forget her troubles. But now, in the bathroom, a private space where she was alone, her face, tense all day, instantly relaxed. No one could see, so she didn’t need to pretend.
Guan Xi took a deep breath, holding back the overwhelming sourness that surged. She undressed and walked into the shower, turning on the showerhead, letting the fine water droplets fall on her body.
It had been a month, and she still couldn’t digest it properly. But, in reality, everything wasn’t too bad. Her father, Guan Xinghao, still doted on her. The day he found out she had eavesdropped on their conversation and learned the truth, he told her that he cherished her like his own daughter. Regardless of whether the real daughter appeared or not, she would always be his jewel.
He wouldn’t change.
She believed, truly believed.
Yet, she still felt uncomfortable because she couldn’t forget the day her mother mentioned finding that daughter, the starry-eyed expression in her eyes. The usually proud Guan Xi, who had been carefree for half her life, was instantly defeated by that expression.
**
After the shower, Guan Xi came out in her pajamas. She had secretly cried for a while just now, but only for a short while because she was afraid that her swollen eyes would be noticed by Jiang Suizhou. She couldn’t stand being discovered in such an unfortunate and miserable state.
Jiang Suizhou had already taken a shower in another bathroom; Guan Xi spent too much time in the bathroom, and he couldn’t wait.
At this moment, it was still early. He changed into comfortable home clothes and sat on the sofa, looking at his work on the tablet. Hearing footsteps, he glanced up, and when his gaze touched Guan Xi’s pajamas, he paused.
A strap dress, silk material, very close-fitting, outlining her graceful curves vividly.
Jiang Suizhou withdrew his gaze and restrained his tone, “Isn’t it your period?”
Guan Xi walked over and sat on the other side of the sofa, her thoughts somewhat scattered, “Hmm?”
“Wear pants.”
“Why?”
Jiang Suizhou calmly said, “Wearing this is equivalent to not wearing anything. In case you stain the sheets.”
Guan Xi gave him a sideways glance, “How is it equivalent to not wearing anything? Do you see me wearing this and think you can just come and undress me?”
Jiang Suizhou’s fingers, sliding on the screen, paused, “Even if I don’t undress you, sleeping in this, the shorts will naturally slide up.”
Guan Xi choked, knowing her sleeping habits well. But she never allowed Jiang Suizhou to have the upper hand in language, so she sarcastically said, “If the sheets get dirty, you don’t have to wash them. Such a bother.”
At this point, Jiang Suizhou didn’t bother arguing with her anymore. He could predict that if they continued, Guan Xi would come up with all sorts of fresh vocabulary to shut him up, and he didn’t have the time for a verbal back-and-forth with her.
He continued to slide on the screen. However, as Guan Xi looked at the familiar, indifferent look on Jiang Suizhou’s face, who couldn’t be bothered to argue with her, she inexplicably felt relieved. Staying in this place, facing this well-dressed beast, she seemed to feel that nothing had changed.
Guan Xi sneakily glanced at him a few times, then picked up the remote control and turned on the TV. She chose an old movie but couldn’t really get into it. Halfway through the movie, she stretched her foot and lightly touched the back of the man, who was looking at the tablet, “Jiang Suizhou.”
“Yeah.”
“Are you still working?”
“Yes.”
“Take a break.”
“What’s wrong.” He didn’t stop and continued to focus on the screen.
Guan Xi stretched her foot again, gently pushing him, “Can’t you take a break? I’m feeling a bit annoyed.”
“What do you want to buy?”
“…”
“The watch you mentioned last month has been bought. It’s in the second drawer of the cloakroom.”
“I didn’t mean that… Huh? The watch has arrived? When? Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
Jiang Suizhou faintly smiled, tossed the tablet aside, turned his head, and grabbed her small leg, pulling her over from the other side of the sofa.
“Ah—”
Guan Xi’s nightgown was very short, so with that pull, the fabric brushed over from the sofa, rolling up a large part. Then he could vaguely see that there were no sanitary pads inside.
Jiang Suizhou paused, realizing he had been deceived by her. He directly lifted her onto his lap, his voice lowering, “You didn’t ask.”
During this period, she had been indulging in various thoughts, feeling like she might have lost her parents and everything. How could she possibly remember the watch she had been pestering him for earlier? Although that was the case, whether she wanted it or not, the watch had been bought, after all, it was limited to only a hundred pieces worldwide.
“I’ll go check.” Guan Xi reluctantly gathered herself, trying to get down from his legs.
Jiang Suizhou didn’t let her get down; instead, he lifted her horizontally and headed upstairs, “Check later.”
“Hey—”
Not allowing her to refuse, he directly carried her back to the room.
When Guan Xi was thrown onto the bed by him, she angrily pinched him, “Are you planning to have a fierce battle with me?!”
“You’re not having your period, why lie to me?”
“I, I am having it!”
Jiang Suizhou leaned down, his slender fingers hooking the edge of the white lace, gently pulling it up, his tone calm, “Where?”
“…”
Seeing through her lie, he directly lowered his head and bit her lips.
They had been together for almost three years. Although these three years didn’t resemble a very serious couple, with more time apart than together, whenever they met, it always ended up in bed.
But they had known each other for a long time.
During their student days, both sets of parents had talked about them getting married. A power couple, it seemed fitting, so at that time, they would slightly pretend to have good feelings in front of their parents. In daily life, in front of others, Jiang Suizhou would also indulge Guan Xi, displaying a caring and biased attitude towards her.
In reality, during their youth, neither of them held a high opinion of each other.
Guan Xi looked down on Jiang Suizhou because she thought he was too pretentious, always carrying an air of superiority. Despite clearly having the charm to flirt with people, he still acted aloof, putting on a faux compassionate and high-minded appearance.
Jiang Suizhou, on the other hand, disliked Guan Xi for being too indulgent. She was clearly the type who needed to be pampered and spoiled to eat her meals without fuss. In his youth, he was too proud and had neither the time nor the inclination to indulge someone.
When Guan Xi was nineteen, she went to study in the United States. Jiang Suizhou, two years older, was already studying abroad at that time. She had been admitted to the same university as him, not because he was there, but because it was a good school that she believed suited her. However, in the eyes of their parents, they were seen as a match made in heaven. Little did their parents know that during the two years they attended the same school abroad, they didn’t even meet.
With no one watching them overseas, they didn’t even bother pretending.
Their relationship truly solidified when Guan Xi returned to China at the age of twenty-three, celebrating her birthday. That day, they had both drunk some alcohol. As her almost-fiancé, he had the responsibility to escort her back to her hotel room. Fate intervened, and under the influence of alcohol, their eyes met, emotions stirred, and two adults did what adults do.
Afterward, they decided to be together.
Their thoughts were the same; they were destined to be together sooner or later, so why not ahead of schedule since they had already crossed that line? But after spending some time together, there was another important factor that brought them closer.
That factor was their physical compatibility.
Jiang Suizhou enjoyed the taste of indulgence, relishing it tirelessly.
Guan Xi, on the other hand, appreciated how Jiang Suizhou let go of his “I’m compassionate like Buddha” demeanor in bed. Honestly, she couldn’t resist his demeanor in bed, and she had to admit that despite their mismatched personalities, their love life was incredibly harmonious.
Being adults, satisfaction in this aspect was indeed crucial.
“What did you say you were annoyed about just now?” Sweat dripped down, and Jiang Suizhou leaned over her ear.
Guan Xi’s breath was uneven, and there was a glimmer of moisture in her eyes, “What…?”
“In the living room, you mentioned feeling a bit annoyed.”
Guan Xi remembered, hesitated for a moment, and then threw her imaginary worst-case scenario onto him, “Nothing. Um… it’s just… Jiang Suizhou, what if one day you become a pauper, what would you do?”
Jiang Suizhou gave her a skeptical look, “Impossible.”
She looked at him and persisted, “I mean, hypothetically.”
Jiang Suizhou, thrown off by her actions, paused and casually said, “If… isn’t there still you?”
“Me?”
Due to the impact of desire, Jiang Suizhou’s words were already a playful joke without much sincerity, “Sell those bags and watches I gave you, and return the money to me.”
Shocked by the realness of it, Guan Xi exclaimed, “…Dream on!”
