Chapter 30: Conspiracy
In front of her, it was all white. After focusing a bit, Guan Xi saw a transparent glass bottle. A thin tube hung vertically from the bottle’s opening, and drops of liquid were dripping into… her own hand back. Guan Xi slowly blinked her eyes, feeling her throat extremely dry.
“Xi Xi? Xi Xi, you’re awake.”
Someone was sitting beside her, and upon seeing her wake up, they quickly reached out to touch her face. Guan Xi looked up, “Dad…”
Guan Xinghao: “You finally woke up. Do you know how worried dad was?”
Guan Xi: “Why am I here? I came out…”
Guan Xinghao: “Yeah, fortunately, we found you in time, and nothing serious happened to you!”
Guan Xi was stunned and immediately asked, “Then, where is he? Where is Jiang Suizhou?”
“Oh, Sui Zhou is right here—”
Guan Xinghao gestured to a spot.
Without Guan Xinghao blocking her view, Guan Xi finally noticed that this was a double room, and Jiang Suizhou was on the bed next to hers. He was sitting, with a small table for meals that now held a laptop.
“Are you okay?” He turned to look at her and asked.
Guan Xi stared at him intently, from head to toe, and noticed that his right leg was wrapped in a cast.
“What happened to your leg?” Guan Xi asked.
Guan Xinghao explained, “Sui Zhou injured his leg, but it’s not too serious. Don’t worry.”
Guan Xi was surprised. His leg was injured? When did that happen? He had been carrying her for quite a while… Could it be that he was enduring the pain the whole time?
Guan Xi glared at Jiang Suizhou, “Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
Jiang Suizhou didn’t answer, only said, “You’ve woken up, have something to eat. You’ve slept for a day and a night.”
“But you—” Guan Xi started.
“As long as you’re alive, it’s fine. Don’t think too much.”
“…”
Guan Xi always thought that Jiang Suizhou was a very cold-blooded person, always calculating and doing things that benefited himself. But this time… she felt that she might have misunderstood him a bit. Maybe… his feelings for her were more genuine than she had imagined.
After Guan Xi woke up, the doctor came in to check on her again. Her fever had subsided, and the minor injuries on her body had been treated with no major issues. After finishing the porridge, Guan Xinghao helped her lie down. At that moment, someone knocked on the door – it was Wei Shaomin and Guan Ying.
“Xi Xi, how do you feel?” Wei Shaomin asked.
Guan Xi couldn’t help feeling resentful. She pulled the blanket and replied in a muffled voice, “I’m fine.”
Guan Xinghao said, “Your mom and sister were here earlier, staying with you in the ward. Dad asked them to go back and rest. Now, it’s your mom’s turn to stay with you. Is that okay?”
Guan Xi almost blurted out, “No need!”
Wei Shaomin was slightly surprised. Guan Xi continued, “There are doctors and nurses here, and I’m fine. I just want to sleep. You don’t need to stay with me.”
“But dad is worried,” Guan Xinghao added.
“Isn’t Jiang Suizhou still here?” Guan Xi said, “You guys have nothing to do here, just take a look and go back. I don’t need anyone to accompany me.”
Guan Xinghao furrowed his brows, but Guan Xi’s attitude was firm, so he didn’t say anything more.
“By the way, have they found the one who kidnapped me?” Guan Xi suddenly asked.
“Yes! Of course! Anyone who dares to harm you, even if they hide in the corners of the earth, dad will dig them out. He is still in a coma, but don’t worry, the police have been alerted, and he will definitely face legal consequences.”
Guan Xi glanced at Guan Ying. Guan Ying’s heart skipped a beat, and she averted her gaze. Fang Zhihong was still unconscious, and she didn’t know how much Guan Xi knew, but she was sure she couldn’t escape the consequences of Fang Zhihong’s actions.
“Alright, you all can go now. I want to take a nap.” Guan Xi didn’t want to say much at this moment. After all, everything would be known once Fang Zhihong woke up.
“Okay, when you feel better, dad will come to take you home.”
“Mm.”
After everyone left the ward, Guan Xi secretly breathed a sigh of relief. The internal conflict and the unrestrained resentment made it difficult for her to face Wei Shaomin.
“Not feeling well?” Jiang Suizhou’s voice came.
Guan Xi shook her head, “No… do you have anything else?”
“I have nothing.”
“Oh.” Guan Xi glanced at him, and Jiang Suizhou’s complexion was much paler than before. She remembered his disheveled appearance in the forest. At that time, he didn’t have the noble bearing of a young master from the Jiang family.
Hmm… thinking about this, she felt a little touched.
“Jiang Suizhou.”
“Hmm?”
“Have you ever thought, if you kept dragging me in the forest, and in the end, no one found us, what would we do?”
“It won’t happen.”
“I’m saying just in case, what if, what if no one found us…” Guan Xi raised her eyebrows slightly, “Then you would be dying with me.”
Jiang Suizhou calmly said, “That won’t happen.”
Damn, can’t he just say something cheesy like, “It wouldn’t be bad to live and die together!”
Guan Xi gritted her teeth, “Just in case! What if! Aren’t you afraid?”
Jiang Suizhou glanced at her and reassured, “The reason we were found after a night was because it rained heavily, and it was dark. If it was daytime, we could have been found even earlier. Zhou Hao will find a way, you have to believe that finding us is not that difficult.”
Guan Xi: “…”
She pulled the blanket over her head, turned away, and didn’t want to talk to him anymore.
Jiang Suizhou glanced at her again, “Sleep well, don’t be sulky.”
“No need for you to care!”
Jiang Suizhou: “…”
The temper of a lazy fish came instantly.
**
In the hospital parking lot, a black Rolls-Royce slowly drove out. Inside the car, Guan Xinghao’s face looked a bit unpleasant.
Guan Ying said, “Dad, I’m really sorry. I know Fang Zhihong. But I don’t know why he had such thoughts and even hurt Xi Xi…”
Guan Xinghao’s tone sounded a bit cold, “Didn’t you say before that you had no contact with the people from your foster parents?”
“I never contacted him. He came to find me…”
Wei Shaomin couldn’t stand seeing Guan Ying being so cautious, and said discontentedly, “Why are you being angry with Ying Ying? She can’t control that person.”
Guan Xinghao rubbed his forehead, “I’m not angry with Ying Ying. I’m just asking. Such a big matter, and Xi Xi almost… Can you blame me for being anxious!”
Wei Shaomin said, “I know you’re anxious, but Xi Xi is fine in the hospital now. And what’s the use of asking Ying Ying? You should ask Fang Zhihong about this matter.”
“I will naturally handle his side. I will find out what he wants to do!”
…
At night, at the Wei family residence.
“Xi Xi woke up, right? Okay, I got it, I’ll come over right away.” Wei Xiuyang picked up the car keys, ready to go out.
“Xiuyang!”
Wei Xiuyang turned around and saw Wei Zihao coming down from upstairs, “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to the hospital.”
“You just went to the hospital recently, didn’t you?”
Wei Xiuyang said, “When I went, Guan Xi wasn’t awake. Now she’s awake, and I want to go see her.”
“Stop right there.” Wei Zihan frowned, coldly saying, “Look at how anxious you are. Even if it’s our parents lying in the hospital, you wouldn’t be this proactive.”
“What are you talking about?” Wei Xiuyang retorted.
Wei Zihan walked over and grabbed Wei Xiuyang’s arm. “What I mean is, you should know your limits. Getting so close to Guan Xi is not beneficial!”
“What do you mean?”
“Now, do you still not understand the situation?” Wei Zihan sneered. “Guan Xi is just an adopted daughter. Sooner or later, she’ll—”
“Can you stop targeting her all the time?” Wei Xiuyang interrupted her.
Wei Zihan laughed coldly. “Do you think it’s only me targeting her now? Wei Xiuyang, please take a look at your own last name. Right now, our entire Wei family is siding with Guan Ying, helping her plan. And you, foolishly trying to please Guan Xi, who are you trying to upset?”
“Siding with her?” Wei Xiuyang’s eyes narrowed. “Wasn’t it you who leaked the information about her background before?”
“Me?” Wei Zihan angrily said, “Do you think I could keep it completely secret, so that the Guan family couldn’t find out anything? This was something Grandfather ordered to be done, not my business!”
Wei Xiuyang’s heart sank. “Aunt and Guan Ying haven’t been harmed much, have they? Have you extended your hands too far?”
“Aunt and Guan Ying haven’t been harmed much? Are you too naive?” Wei Zihan bit her lip. “Yes, over the years, Aunt does have genuine feelings for Guan Xi. But can that compare to her own daughter? When the adopted daughter threatens the position of the biological daughter, can she just sit back and watch? And don’t think Guan Ying is innocent. She knew long ago from Grandfather and Grandmother that Guan Xi is not her real sister. She also knew that they planned to expose it. Now, she’s clean in the eyes of others and is throwing all the blame onto me.”
Wei Xiuyang’s eyes trembled slightly. “Let go.”
Wei Zihan: “Xiuyang—”
Wei Xiuyang forcefully pulled her hand away.
**
Wei Xiuyang was the person who knew best what feelings Guan Xi had for Wei Shaomin. When they were young, on suitable occasions like birthdays, Mother’s Day, New Year’s Day, and even Valentine’s Day… she would guide him on what gifts to give Wei Shaomin. Guan Xi was already hurt enough by the revelation that she was an adopted daughter. If she knew that her mother’s family was secretly plotting against her, what would she think?
Wei Xiuyang felt uneasy, rushing to the hospital to find Guan Xi lying in bed with an IV drip. It made him feel even more uncomfortable.
“Wei Xiuyang?” Guan Xi, bored, saw him coming and sat up a bit. “Just sent away Ningyi and the others. You came at the right time.”
The room had two people, but Wei Xiuyang didn’t even glance at Jiang Suizhou. He sat down beside Guan Xi and asked, “Are you okay?”
Guan Xi pointed to the back of her right hand. “Can I be okay? My hand is swollen from the IV.”
“You’re too weak right now; you need this.” Wei Xiuyang said.
Guan Xi snorted and glanced at him. “You come empty-handed. Are you still a human?”
Wei Xiuyang hurried, indeed having nothing with him. After being scolded, he immediately said, “What do you want to eat?”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Guan Xi excitedly said, “Suddenly craving fried chicken, sashimi, pizza, and such.”
Without hesitation, Wei Xiuyang said, “I’ll go get them for you!”
“Great!”
“Don’t eat.” As Wei Xiuyang was about to stand up, he heard a cold voice from the next bed.
He paused and looked at the man on the adjacent bed. Jiang Suizhou calmly met his gaze and said, “She can’t eat these things right now. Even if you buy them for her, it’s pointless.”
Wei Xiuyang couldn’t stand Jiang Suizhou, and initially, he wanted to argue. But then he thought about it and realized he had indeed acted impulsively. Guan Xi had just recovered from a high fever, still looking weak. How could she eat such greasy food?
Unable to retort, he sat back with a grim expression.
Guan Xi immediately wore a bitter expression. In fact, she didn’t usually crave these kinds of food; it was just a sudden whim after being hungry. “The doctor said I’m fine now and can eat, right?” Guan Xi mumbled, but she stopped speaking when she saw Jiang Suizhou’s stern gaze.
Wei Xiuyang said, “I’ll take you out for a good meal when you’re feeling better. For now, let’s take it easy.”
Guan Xi sighed, “I never thought there would be a day when Guan Xi couldn’t have fried chicken. I usually don’t even look at these things.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Wei Xiuyang glanced at the fruit plate beside her. “Should I prepare some fruits for you?”
Guan Xi nonchalantly agreed with a sound. Wei Xiuyang peeled an apple, cut it into pieces, picked up a fork, speared a piece, and handed it to her mouth. Guan Xi’s right hand was inconvenient due to the injection, and considering that Wei Xiuyang was someone she had been ordering around since childhood, she didn’t hesitate at all. She opened her mouth very naturally.
Jiang Suizhou’s fingers, scrolling on the iPad, paused for a moment, and his gaze glanced sideways at the two on the adjacent bed.
Wei Xiuyang fed her apple bite by bite.
After a while, Guan Xi instructed, “Get me something else. Cut a star fruit, and hmm… wash some cherries.”
“Alright.”
“Guan Xi.”
Guan Xi was enjoying the fruit, and suddenly, she was called by Jiang Suizhou. She turned to him, “What’s up?”
Jiang Suizhou was uncomfortable watching this feeding scene. He coldly said, “Eat less; it’s too cold.”
