Chapter 140: Assassination
There really were assassins!
Jiang Xuening had just returned to her carriage when chaos erupted outside, leaving her astonished. However, having witnessed the merciless siege of the Tianjiao Sect by Xie Wei at the Shangqing Temple, she wasn’t very frightened by this group of assassins.
Moreover, the assassins were all heading towards Xiao Dingfei.
Who would have thought there were people in the nearby woods?
The group was somewhat caught off guard.
Fortunately, Jian Shu, who had been guarding outside the carriage, noticed something amiss and blocked the path in front of Xiao Dingfei’s carriage. Drawing his sword, he wielded it with such ferocity that it was clear he was far more skilled than Xie Wei had casually mentioned.
Clanging sounds filled the air!
Screams echoed intermittently.
In no time, the ground outside the woods was stained with blood, and people began to fall one after another.
The assassins were exceptionally skilled and ruthless, fighting with a death-defying ferocity. Upon realizing that Jian Shu was steadfastly guarding Xiao Dingfei’s carriage, three to five of them surrounded him, making it impossible for him to break free.
Two others flanked from the side.
Masked with black cloth, revealing only their eyes, which gleamed with a chilling light, they were terrifying at first sight.
The two raised their knives and thrust them into the carriage!
“Rip!” The curtain was instantly slashed open.
Trapped inside the carriage, Xiao Dingfei, though a fool, was armed with a sword. Upon hearing about the assassins, he had drawn it and held it ready. As the assassins’ knives came in, he immediately blocked with his sword!
Then came two “thud” sounds.
Two arrows shot almost simultaneously, piercing through the foreheads of the two assassins with unerring accuracy!
Xiao Dingfei looked outside—
In the shadow of an old tree at the edge of the woods stood a young man in blue, Dao Qin, who was rarely seen by Xie Wei’s side. Holding a bow and arrows, he calmly shot one arrow per person!
In no time, the ground was littered with bodies.
Only then did Xie Wei lift the curtain and step out of the carriage, standing on the shaft. Surveying the bloody scene, he calmly ordered, “Leave one alive.”
Dao Qin secretly curled his lips.
Though somewhat dissatisfied, he lowered the last arrow on his bowstring slightly.
“Whoosh,” a sound of breaking through the air.
The arrow shot out like a bolt of lightning, piercing through the shoulder of the last assassin with such force that it pinned him to the thick wooden side of Xiao Dingfei’s carriage!
Still inside the carriage, Xiao Dingfei saw the arrow shaft protruding through the wood and was so terrified that his scalp tingled!
He couldn’t help but curse, “Damn it!”
Who were they trying to kill?
The assassins came quickly and died quickly.
The entourage, now drenched in cold sweat, couldn’t help but think that if they had noticed the danger a bit later, given the assassins’ prowess, who knows how many would have died.
Looking at Jian Shu and Dao Qin beside Xie Wei, they felt a newfound respect.
Jiang Xuening watched from a distance, not daring to get out of the carriage. Xiao Yuan’s carriage was in front, and he got out with a frightened look. After scanning the surroundings, his face immediately darkened with anger: “So there really are assassins!”
Xie Wei did not get out of the carriage but called for Jian Shu.
Jian Shu, with blood still on his sword, understood immediately and walked straight to the assassin pinned to the carriage, tearing off the black cloth covering his face.
The man appeared to be in his thirties, with a scar on his left cheek.
His face was twisted in pain from the shoulder wound.
As soon as the black cloth was removed, a fierce look flashed in the assassin’s eyes. His jaw muscles bulged as if he was about to bite down on something.
His reaction was quick, but the young man in front of him was even quicker!
Before he could bite down, there was a blur of movement.
The assassin felt a sharp pain in his jaw and then lost consciousness—Jian Shu had dislocated his jaw in an instant!
Xiao Dingfei, watching from the side, felt a chill in his own jaw.
Despair appeared in the assassin’s eyes.
Jian Shu skillfully and effortlessly extracted a small poison capsule from the assassin’s mouth and reported to Xie Wei, “Sir, he’s a death warrior.”
Xie Wei, who had just put away the “Master of the Zhuoqin Hall” seal, was not surprised and smiled, “It seems we won’t get any information from him.”
Xiao Yuan, who had just walked over, was somewhat fearful.
Xie Wei waved his hand lightly, “Kill him.”
The assassin was shocked, and before the expression could fully form on his face, Jian Shu had already slashed his neck, blood spilling everywhere. He then cleanly pulled out his sword and threw the lifeless body aside.
Everyone shivered involuntarily.
Zhang Zhe, watching from the front, found it unusual and frowned slightly.
Xie Wei, however, remained calm and looked apologetically at Xiao Yuan, “Look at me, I forgot. This assassin seemed to be targeting Young Master Dingfei, a grave crime indeed. Without consulting you, I had him killed. I hope you don’t mind?”
Seeing the death warrior fail to commit suicide had terrified Xiao Yuan.
But seeing the man die in front of him, he was both shocked and relieved, still somewhat dazed, he said, “I don’t mind. It’s just a pity. Even though he was a death warrior from the Tianjiao Sect, with severe torture, he might have revealed some information…”
A death warrior from the Tianjiao Sect?
Xiao Dingfei glanced at the mess on the ground, a cold smile forming in his heart. He felt a chill in his teeth and a bit of pity.
He raised his head to look at Xie Wei.
The sun had come out at noon, but now it was near dusk, with the sun setting in the west.
The remaining sunlight cast a bloody red hue.
Fog rose in the mountains and forests.
The young master stood tall, his originally white robe now covered by the evening glow, as if soaked in blood and faded by time, flowing with a thin layer of red.
Xie Wei seemed relieved and smiled faintly, “It’s good that the Duke does not blame us. If Young Master Dingfei, the former heir of the Duke’s household, had met with any mishap, no one could bear the responsibility. After all, it is said that the heir once saved the emperor’s life, and the emperor often remembers this favor…” Xiao Yuan’s expression changed slightly.
He looked up at Xie Wei.
But Xie Wei stood with his back to the west, the slanting sunlight making it hard to see his face. He slightly cupped his hands towards Xiao Yuan and then returned to the carriage.
Jiang Xuening watched from a distance, slowly lowering the curtain, lost in thought, and sighed, “It’s time to return to the capital.”
